The vivacity and richness of a Franciacorta wine by Ca' del Bosco

The estate

When Annamaria Clementi acquired a small house that was poised on a hill in Ebursco in 1964 and planted vines there, her son Maurizio's life changed. At the age of just 15, the young man stumbled upon the fabulous Franciacorta terroir. Fascinated by the Champagne method, he embarked on a pursuit of excellence that has never ceased to drive Ca' del Bosco. Maurizio Zanella became an emblematic figure in the revival of Italian wines, producing some of the most renowned red, white and sparkling organic wines in Italy. There is no doubt that with this talented winemaker at the helm, the revolutionary estate has many more chapters to write.

The vineyard

Ca' del Bosco's Cuvée Prestige Edizione 44 Extra Brut is made from 197 different parcels of vines averaging between 20-30 years of age: 162 parcels of Chardonnay, 30 parcels of Pinot Noir and 5 parcels of Pinot Blanc.

The wine

Cuvée Prestige Edizione 44 is made from a blend of vintages. To the basic vintage, proportions of reserve wines from other years are gradually added. Thus this Franciacorta is made up of 71% of the 2019 vintage to which 26% of the 2018 vintage and 3% of the 2017 vintage have been added.

The vintage

The winter was mild and relatively dry. Although conditions were favourable at the beginning of spring, the heavy rainfall and cool weather from the second week of April until mid-May had an impact on the quality of the flowering and the yields. The mild weather in mid-May favoured a good fruit set. The particularly dry weather from June, recognised as the driest month in the last two decades, until mid-July led to water stress, fortunately offset by beneficial rainy spells in early August. The harvest began on 20 August and was carried out under excellent weather conditions, ending on 5 September. Despite the small size of the bunches and the low yields, this vintage showcases a very high quality.

Vinification and ageing

The grapes are harvested by hand with the greatest care, sorted and then cooled. They are then soaked in a berry spa before being dried. Thanks to pressing without oxygen, the fruit does not oxidise and its aromatic potential is preserved. Fermentation then takes place until the following March in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. An initial 7-month ageing period allows the fascinating characteristics of this terroir to be fully expressed. The wines are then blended during a magic ritual to create this Cuvée Prestige Edizione 44. This blend benefits from an additional 25 months of ageing on the lees. Lastly, the disgorging is carried out in an oxygen-free environment to prevent oxidation and avoid the addition of sulphites in order to achieve an utterly pure Prestige Cuvée.

The blend

Ca' del Bosco's Cuvée Prestige Edizione 44 Extra Brut is a blend of Chardonnay (81.5%), Pinot Noir (17%) and Pinot Blanc (1.5%).
